Protection of Angels
The Lionsklúbburinn Ægir was founded in 1957 and has supported activities in Solheimar since its establishment. The first members gave the village gifts and helped later with electrical updates. In the 1960s, men in the club worked on the construction of houses in the village and helped also with the financing and management of the expansions and renovations to Solheimahús and the installation of the swimming pool. Every year, the club makes a donation to Solheimar. Over the years, these have included synthetic fire and safty equipment, kitchen equipment, new flooring in the sport hall/theater, an automobile, building materials for Ólasmiðju, furniture and equipment in an assisted-living facility, a pottery kiln and greenhouse equipment.
Members of the Lions have come to plant things in Solheimar and hold an annual Christmas party in the village, which is one of the highlights for the inhabitants. . Support to Residents and the Community
In accordance with the role and purpose of the community, operations depend on four funds:
Holiday and Training Fund
The Training Fund was founded in 2002, on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sesselja Hreindís Sigmundsdóttir. It has been combined with the Holiday Fund and together these go toward holidays for the home population and to promote the education and training of residents.
This fund accumulates from set annual contributions from the companies in Solheimar and Solheimar itself. The fund is primarily responsible for the purchase of works of art and the sponsoring of cultural events. Recently, it has been the main task of the fund to obtain the artwork Sólgátt by the artist Ruri.
Industrial Development Fund
Profits of the companies of Solheimar flow into this fund. The fund is used to support and strengthen economic development and for overall improvement of the economic activity in Solheimar. Among its projects, the fund has been buying various tools for workshops and renovating the coffee house. Monies are also used to support the expansion of the Sunna greenhouse.
This fund was established on August 23, 2005. That year, the fund was used to purchase the bells and altar for the Solheimar Church.
