Since 2004, there has been collaboration between the national prison and probation system and Solheimar on the project “Reform and Community Reintegration for Model Prisoners”.
The project has gone extremely well with substantial increases in quality of life and community involvement and many prisoners have made positive impacts in the Solheimar community.
Two to three prisoners stay in Solheimar at a time to both work and socialize with other residents. Strict rules are placed on them during their stay and must be followed without exception.
Prisoners have a unique opportunity to rebuild relationships with their family since their spouses, children, or other relatives may live with them in the village for short or long periods during their stay.
Solheimar’s priest, Sr. Birgir Thomsen, is in charge of the project.
