A dynamic and diverse work takes place in Sólheimar Church.

Ceremonies are held in the church every other Sunday throughout the year.

Sesseljuhús Center for Sustainable Development is an educational center and an exhibition for sustainable buildings.

Education about environmental issues takes place in the house as well as conferences, seminars and workshops.

Organic farming

Sólheimar was a pioneer in organic farming in the Nordic Countries.

In Sólheimar there is an organically certified greenhouse, forestry, arboretum and egg production.

The bakery and food-processing at Sólheimar are organically certified, and the coffee shop, Græna kannan, offers only organically certified refreshments.

The long walk of Reynir Pétur

Reynir Pétur walked around Iceland in 1985.

The walk is an important milestone in the history of Sólheimar and raised an awareness of the status of disabled people of Iceland.

The walk started in Selfoss on the 25th of May 1985 and ended 32 days and 1,417 km later.

International community

People from different nationalities live in Sólheimar.

Interns and volunteers from all around the world live and work in Sólheimar from 3 to 12 months.

Work camps for volunteers are in Sólheimar during the summer.

Solheimar is a world renowned sustainable community known for its artistic and ecological atmosphere where about 100 people live and work together. It was founded in 1930 by Sesselja Hreindís Sigmundsdóttir (1902-1974). It is a small village set out in the countryside, characterized by vegetation, open common spaces and buildings that nicely co-exist with the landscape. Solheimar is blessed with enough space for residential and common housing and there are ideal conditions for outdoor activities in the village, which play a big part in the residents' health and well- being. The Solheimar community focuses on the growth and development of man and nature. The social emphasis is that different individuals are offered variable opportunities to work, live, and socialize.
